The Parthenon and The Statue of Athena
Nashville, also known as "The Athens of the South," constructed many buildings based on ancient originals for the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition (Worlds Fair). The Parthenon was the centerpiece of these structures, and it was the only one that was an exact reproduction. The original structure was built out of wood, plaster, and brick, but was rebuilt on the same foundations from concrete from 1920 to 1925. The interior of the Nashville Parthenon was completed in 1931, and houses an art museum. The central focus of the art museum is the 42 foot re-creation of the Athena Parthenos (Statue of Athena), which was completed in 1990, and based on the long-lost original.
