Dinosaur Depot in Canon City Colorado
Just 12 miles from Canon City, Colorado, lies a region called Garden Park Fossil Area. For over 125 years, the Garden Park Fossil Area has produced world-class, late Jurassic dinosaur fossils. Most notable of the fossil finds are 3 articulated skeletons of "Stegosaurus stenops." The first Stegosaurus was discovered in 1886 and presently resides in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.. The most recent Stegosaurus find, in 1992, was the most complete skeleton and jacket (i.e. intact dinosaur hide) ever found. The jacket weighed in excess of 13,000 pounds and was taken to Dinosaur Depot for processing, where a replica of the 1992 skeleton is also on display. Join us on our visit to Dinosaur Depot Museum, observe paleontologists working in the laboratory, and see exhibits from the Garden Park Fossil Area.
