Royal Gorge Bridge in Caon City Colorado

Royal Gorge Bridge in Caon City Colorado Picture
The Royal Gorge is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River and offers splendid scenery in the steep granite cliffs and white-water rapids below. In 1929 the Royal Gorge Bridge was constructed at a cost of $350,000 - it took just 6 months to complete. Soaring 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River, it is the World's Highest Suspension Bridge and can hold in excess of 2 million pounds. Our visit to Royal Gorge Bridge also includes the Incline Railway and Aerial Tram. Construction of the Royal Gorge Incline Railway started in 1930 and concluded in 1931. It was built by the same crew responsible for the bridge. With a 100 percent grade and a 45 degree angle, the Royal Gorge Incline Railway is the World's Steepest Incline Railway and it descends 1,550 feet in 5.5 minutes. At a length of 1,178 feet, the Royal Gorge Tram is the World's Longest Single-Span Aerial Tram. It was constructed in 1968 and is capable of carrying a maximum of 35 people at about 11 mph.
