Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs Colorado
Named by Colorado City surveyor Rufus Cable in 1859 when a co-worker suggested that it would be a wonderful location for a beer garden. Cable remarked that with the scenery it would be fit for the Gods. The beer garden never happened, but the name stuck. Differing from the Garden of the Gods in Hawaii, Garden of the Gods Colorado is an area of Geological Formations made of red and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestones that have been tilted up by faulting. Of the formations, Steamboat Rock, Balanced Rock, Kissing Camels, Sleeping Giant, Cathedral Spires, Sentinel Rock, and The Tower of Babel are the most notable. Our tour of Garden of the Gods includes a high definition film called "How Did Those Red Rocks Get There", presented at the Visitors Center, which gives a detailed description of how Garden of the Gods was formed.
