Fort Pulaski
Fort Pulaski was never truly completed, since construction on the fort stopped in 1861 before the armament was finished or the fort was garrisoned. Unfortunately Ft. Pulaski is best known for its failure and being a turning point in Military History. In 1862, during the Battle of Fort Pulaski, rifled cannons were first used in combat. The long-range weapons shattered the fort's brick and mortar walls from over a mile away and forced confederate surrender after just 30 hours of bombardment. The demise of Ft. Pulaski signaled the end of masonry fortifications in America.
