Tybee Island
Tybee Island was originally claimed by the Spanish and was a popular spot for pirates to evade their pursuers. Pirates also used the inland waterways as a source of fresh water. After the Spanish were driven south, Englishmen began to settle on the island in 1733 before moving onto the mainland and what is now known as Savannah. Although renamed Savannah Beach from 1957 to 1974, the inhabitants have reverted to Tybee, which is Native American for "salt." You can't miss Tybee Island Lighthouse, which is one of only a few 18th Century lighthouses still in operation in the United States. Enjoy a refreshing mid-morning on Georgia's Atlantic coast at Tybee Island Beach.
