The Davenport House
Built in the federal style by master builder and homeowner Isaiah Davenport around 1820, the house was used as primary residence for the Davenport family as well as a showplace for his workmanship. After Isaiah's death in 1827, his wife Sarah managed to keep the home by renting out her slaves as laborers and by taking in borders. She sold the house in 1840, and it eventually became a tenement. The house was slated for demolition in 1955, but 7 women managed to raise $22,500 and save it from the wrecking ball. This was the first act of the Historic Savannah Foundation, which is responsible for many of the restorations in historic Savannah. The house was used for office space until money could be raised to restore it, and open it as a museum in 1963.
