Fort Sumter, which was built in the early 1800's, is constructed of 70,000 tons of granite whose walls are five feet thick. It is best known as the site where the fighting of the Civil War began in 1861. A total of 7 million pounds of artillery were shot at the fort throughout its history, yet it still stands. It became a National Monument in 1948, and though it is accessible only by water, it is one of the most visited sites in the Charleston area.
