USS Yorktown

USS Yorktown Picture
Anchored at Patriots Point (where we board The Spirit of Carolina), the USS Yorktown is a World War II CV-10 aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1943 and named after the CV-5 carrier, which was destroyed at Pearl Harbor, the Yorktown was deployed in the Philippine Sea, Iwo Jima, and played an important role in attacks on Tokyo in WWII. Known as "The Fighting Lady", she helped sink the Japanese battleship called "Yamato". She was also used in Vietnam, and was the ship that the Apollo 8 crew was taken to after splashdown.
