Biltmore House & Gardens, Asheville NC
The four-story Biltmore structure, designed by Richard Morris Hunt, covers 4 acres of land, and is surrounded by many more acres of formal and informal gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. There are 175,000 square feet within Biltmore Mansion and the 250 rooms include: 35 guest and family rooms, 43 bathrooms, and 3 kitchens. The Biltmore Home contains many of the Vanderbilt's treasured collections. In the house, you'll discover original art from masters such as Renoir, Magnificent 16th century tapestries, Napoleon's chess set, a library with 10,000 volumes, a Banquet Hall with a 70 foot ceiling, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, bowling alley, and priceless antiques. The French Renaissance chateau, often called Biltmore Castle, was opened to family and friends on Christmas Eve 1895, and this year for the first time four of the grandest guest suites are now open to see; meticulously restored to their original appearance. Of these rooms, it's said that the Louis XV Suite on the second floor showcases what made Biltmore House a home. At its completion, Biltmore House was the largest privately owned home in America, and it remains so today.
