Mercer-Williams House

Mercer-Williams House Picture
Confederate General Hugh W. Mercer (Great Grandfather of Composer Johnny Mercer) began building Mercer House in 1860, though he never lived there. Because of the Civil War the new owner, John Wilder, did not complete the house until 1868. Eventually Mercer House was employed as the Savannah Shriners Alee Temple, and then lay vacant for a decade. Jim Williams, a wealthy antiques dealer and home restorer, purchased Mercer House in 1969, and after restoring the home, lived there and ran his antiques and restoration business from the carriage house. In 1981, Williams shot and killed his sometimes lover / assistant in Mercer House, claiming it was self-defense. Williams endured four trials for the same crime before being acquitted in 1989, only to die a few months later of pneumonia and a heart attack. He was the main character of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (on New York Times Best Sellers List for 216 weeks). The nonfiction narrative about the shooting and local characters of Savannah was written like a novel. The book was very compelling reading material and greatly increased public interest in Savannah. Clint Eastwood made "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" into a movie in 1997, with Kevin Spacey playing the role of Jim Williams. Many location shoots for the movie were done in and around Mercer House.

Optional "Ghosts & Gravestones" Tour ($25.00 per person)

Optional "Ghosts & Gravestones" Tour ($25.00 per person) Picture
Savannah, Georgia, is well known as "America's Most Haunted City". BVT America neither supports nor denies any claims made by the numerous ghost tours operated in the city. Likewise, BVT would be remiss in showing our tour members the full picture of Savannah without affording them an opportunity to go on an optional ghost tour. Therefore, BVT invites you to experience some of the darker aspects of Savannah with the optional "Ghosts & Gravestones" trolley tour. BVT has reserved space on one of the trolleys for any of our tour members wishing to take the optional $25.00 tour. The tour will take you by many of the noted haunts in Savannah, including: Colonial Cemetery (dating back to the 1700's), The Juliette Gordon Low House, Kehoe House, and Hampton-Lillibridge House (which was exorcised in the 1960's). Exclusive to the "Ghosts & Gravestones" tour is a special nighttime entry into the Sorrel-Weed House, which was featured on SCI-FI Channel's "Ghost Hunters." At 16,000 square feet, Sorrel-Weed House is the largest historic mansion in Savannah, though only a portion of it is accessible on the tour. The "Ghost Hunters" investigators recorded voices and other paranormal sounds in the House and Carriage House leading many to proclaim Sorrel-Weed House a VERIDIED HAUNTED HOUSE. If you are intrigued, BVT recommends that you decide for yourself, but be warned... This tour is not recommended for children under 13, or the faint of heart.

After Isaiah's death in 1827, his wife Sarah managed to keep the home by renting out her slaves as laborers and by taking in borders. She sold the house in 1840, and it eventually became a tenement. The house was slated for demolition in 1955, but 7 women managed to raise $22,500 and save it from the wrecking ball. This was the first act of the Historic Savannah Foundation, which is responsible for many of the restorations in historic Savannah. The house was used for office space until money could be raised to restore it, and open it as a museum in 1963.

Tybee Island

Tybee Island Picture
Tybee Island was originally claimed by the Spanish and was a popular spot for pirates to evade their pursuers. Pirates also used the inland waterways as a source of fresh water. After the Spanish were driven south, Englishmen began to settle on the island in 1733 before moving onto the mainland and what is now known as Savannah. Although renamed Savannah Beach from 1957 to 1974, the inhabitants have reverted to Tybee, which is Native American for "salt." You can't miss Tybee Island Lighthouse, which is one of only a few 18th Century lighthouses still in operation in the United States. Coors Brewery Tours in Golden Colorado

Coors Brewery Tours in Golden Colorado Picture
Coors Brewery is the fifth largest brewing company in the world; third largest in the United States, and the brewery in Golden, Colorado is the largest single site brewery in the world. Adolph Coors, a German immigrant, and his partner, who he bought out in 1880, started the business in Golden in 1873. In prohibition, Coors Brewery was one of the few that remained viable, as the company also produced procelain and malted milk. Experience in "non-brewery" production, left the company perfectly poised to develop other related products. Coors, the first beer to use aluminum cans, and the inventor of the first pllution-free push tab can in the 1970's operates the Rocky Mountain Metal Container factory, the largest manufacturing plant of aluminum cans in the world. Though Coors Beer is widely known around the world, through development, buy-outs, and partnerships, the company has many brands. With Coors Brewing Company, Molson-Coors, and Miller-Coors the company is involved with all varieties of Coors Beer, Molson Ale, Keystone Beer, and Miller Beer, Killian's Irish Red, Extra Gold, Blue Moon, Zima, and seasonal beers in the United States and Canada, and is responsible for more than a dozen brands in the United Kingdom as well. Join us on one of the Coors Brewery Tours in Colorado and find out why Coors Beer, brewed with Rocky Mountain Spring Water, has been winning awards since 1893.

Cripple Creek and Victor Colorado

Cripple Creek and Victor Colorado Picture
"Pikes Peak or Bust" was the popular cry in the Colorado Gold Rush beginning in 1858. Ironically, no one ever discovered gold in the pink granite of Pikes Peak, rather it was named in the Gold Rush because it was an easily identifiable landmark (capable of being seen from over 100 miles away). The discovery of gold in Colorado brought many dynamic changes to the area, including the creation of Colorado Territory in 1861, statehood in 1876, and building cities which started as gold camps (e.g. Denver, Boulder, Central City, Black Hawk, Georgetown, and Idaho Springs). Once mills perfected a way to smelt the gold from the sulfide ore, both gold and silver mining became a major industry in Colorado. By the 1890's significant discoveries of large veins of gold had dwindled. Up until that time, most of the gold discovered in Colorado had been a great distance from Pikes Peak, however just southwest of Pikes Peak, up Ute Pass, a prospector named Bob Womack discovered gold in October of 1890. The towns of Cripple Creek, Colorado and nearby Victor quickly blossomed to serve the miners in the gold camps. The Cripple Creek district of Colorado became the largest gold producing district in Colorado, and the third largest in the United States. From 1891 to 1990, over $17 billion of gold were taken from this small area. In the mid-1940's, the mills in Cripple Creek closed, preventing miners from extracting the gold from the rock, and gold production halted for many years. By the mid-1970's, Cripple Creek and Victor had become near modern-day ghost towns, with most of the buildings turning to hollow shells, and populations mere fractions of what they once were. In 1976, deep shaft mining had depleted the once fertile gold mines in Colorado, but open pit mining began near Victor. It is estimated that $270 million of gold are produced annually from these mines. Coupled with legalized gambling in the district, both towns are experiencing steady growth. Join us in Cripple Creek and Victor for a peek at the gold mining past, a chance to win some Colorado gold, and the unique views from these high valley towns (elevation 9,494 ft).

Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs Colorado

Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs Colorado Picture
Named by Colorado City surveyor Rufus Cable in 1859 when a co-worker suggested that it would be a wonderful location for a beer garden. Cable remarked that with the scenery it would be fit for the Gods. The beer garden never happened, but the name stuck. Differing from the Garden of the Gods in Hawaii, Garden of the Gods Colorado is an area of Geological Formations made of red and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestones that have been tilted up by faulting. Of the formations, Steamboat Rock, Balanced Rock, Kissing Camels, Sleeping Giant, Cathedral Spires, Sentinel Rock, and The Tower of Babel are the most notable. Our tour of Garden of the Gods includes a high definition film called "How Did Those Red Rocks Get There", presented at the Visitors Center, which gives a detailed description of how Garden of the Gods was formed.

Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs Colorado

Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs Colorado Picture
Completed in 1896, Miramont Castle is in the National Register of Historic Places. It was the dream of Father Jean Baptiste Francolon who donated the structure to The Sisters of Mercy prior to its completion. The son of a wealthy French diplomat, Father Francolon had traveled the world before coming to Colorado. The priest described to Angus Gillis, the builder of Miramont, many examples of defferent types of architecture that he found appealing, and in so doing became the architect of one of the most unique structures in Colorado. The word "Miramont" literally translates to "see the mountain." The 42 rooms of this 16,000 square foot structure are truly built into the side of a mountain. The front door is on the first floor, the back door is on the fourth floor, and both doors are walk-out level. Throughout the maze of rooms (few having four walls at right-abgles) one can see nine distinct architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothis, English Tudor, and Domestic Elizabethan.

Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour Cripple Creek Colorado

Near the end of the 1800's, Mary (Mollie) Catherine Gortner moved to Colorado Springs with her husband, son, and daughter from Iowa. Of course, Cripple Creek gold was the news of the day, so when Mollie's son Perry went to work in Cripple Creek as a surveyor mapping mine claims in the spring of 1891, Mollie loaded up the family wagon and joined the next train heading up Ute Pass to visit her son. She essentially set up housekeeping in Perry's half-log half-tent home. In September of that same year, Perry told his mother about a large herd of Elk he had seen while surveying in Poverty Gulch, and Mollie decided to go see it for herself. Hiking up Poverty Gulch, about 300 yards away from the first Cripple Creek Mine (Bob Womack's Gold King Mine), Mollie got winded and decided to rest. When she looked down, a strange rock formation winked at her. Since there were prospectors around, Mollie had the good sense to quietly gather several samples of pure gold laced in quartz, hiding them in her clothing. Mollie's good sense paid off because she was the first woman in the Cripple Creek Gold Camp to discover gold and strike a claim in her own name, clearly defying the conventions of that time. It was so odd that the National Geological Survey reported that the gold was discovered by "Mr. M. C. Gortner" (Mollie's husband's name was Henry and her only son was Perry). After Mollie's death in 1917, Perry continued as one third owner and Managing Operator of the Mollie Kathleen Mine until his death in 1949. The Mollie Kathleen Mine has been conducting mine tours for over 70 years. At present, the Mollie Kathleen has the only vertical shaft gold mine tour available in the United States. The tour will take you down 100 stories and transport you on an air-powered man trip train. In other words, this is a tour you can really get into (i.e. 1.000 feet into the earth). You'll get to learn about Colorado gold mines history and evolution, and receive a sample of your very own Colorado gold ore to take home.

Molly Brown House Museum in Denver Colorado

Molly Brown House Museum in Denver Colorado Picture
In 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank while crossing the Atlantic Ocean on her maiden voyage from England to New York. It was, and still is, one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history with over 1,500 fatalities. A standout in the list of survivors of the Titanic was Mqargaret "Molly" Tobin Brown. Born of humble means in Missouri, Molly migrated west to Colorado, where she married J.J. Brown and climbed in wealth and social status with the Colorado Gold Rush. "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" was a title given to both a book and a movie based on her life, and ironically it came from Molly's own statements to reporters after surviving the Titanic. A world traveler with a tenacious, "take charge" attitude, Molly Brown assisted the women of Lifeboat number 6 in rowing for hours and after being pulled aboard the Carpathia, swung into action rounding up blankets, clothing, and supplies. Confirming that most of her fellow survivors had lost their husbands and/or fathers and all of their possessions, Molly set to work gathering donations from Carpathia's First Class passengers. When Carpathia landed in New York, Molly Brown had raised in excess of $10,000 for the survivors of the Titanic. Moly was also a political activist. She pushed for creating public parks, supported creating a National Juvenile Court System, helped arbitrate labor disputes between striking miners and the Rockefeller Conglomerate, and even ran for the Colorado State Senate in 1901 (before women were allowed to vote). Plainly, Molly defied the conventional barriers thrust on women of her time. Later, Molly worked with Alva Vanderbilt Belmont and Alice Paul in the National Suffrage Movement. In 1914, after all of the national press from surviving the Titanic, Margaret Brown ran for political office again, this time for the U.S. Senate, representing Colorado. Though The New York Times favored her to win, she withdrew from the race to assist in the relief efforts of World War I. Ultimately, Molly Brown gave up becoming a U.S. Senator, but earned herself the French Legion of Honor, for her relief work. A life-long fan of the theater, Molly also performed on stage in both Paris and New York. The Molly Brown House in Denver is located on Pennsylvania Avenue in the prestigious Capital Hill District. Built in 1889, the eclectic house features Classic Queen Anne, Romanesque, and Neoclassical designs. Though the house had every convenience available in the 19th century (including indoor plumbing, electricity, and telephone lines), Molly and J.J. made a few modifications when they purchased the residence in 1894. Truly an American Original, Molly Brown lived in many different homes here and abroad, but the beautifully restored mansion in Denver that she once called home stands as a monument to ther larger-than-life character.

Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Manitou Springs Colorado

Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Manitou Springs Colorado Picture
In 1833, English Professor Katherine Lee Bates traveled to the summit of Pikes Peak by carriage. She was so moved by the spectacular views that she wrote a poem that night in her hotel room, titling it "Pikes Peak." The poem was later published and titled "America," but we know it today as the lyrics to "America the Beautiful." One can easily see "...Purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain" beholding the awe-inspiring sights from the summit of Pikes Peak. The Mountain was named for Zebulon Pike, who first documented and tried to climb it in 1806. Because of the 25 percent grade, cog trains (employing tracks with gears) must be used to reach the summit of Pikes Peak by rail. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway was started by Zalmon Simmons (founder of Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company) in 1889 and delivered its first passengers to the summit in June of 1891. Though vastly defferent from those first rail cars, today's locomotives deliver passengers to the 14,110 ft. summit at least six times per day. Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the highest railway in the United States.

Royal Gorge Bridge in Caon City Colorado

Royal Gorge Bridge in Caon City Colorado Picture
The Royal Gorge is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River and offers splendid scenery in the steep granite cliffs and white-water rapids below. In 1929 the Royal Gorge Bridge was constructed at a cost of $350,000 - it took just 6 months to complete. Soaring 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River, it is the World's Highest Suspension Bridge and can hold in excess of 2 million pounds. Our visit to Royal Gorge Bridge also includes the Incline Railway and Aerial Tram. Construction of the Royal Gorge Incline Railway started in 1930 and concluded in 1931. It was built by the same crew responsible for the bridge. With a 100 percent grade and a 45 degree angle, the Royal Gorge Incline Railway is the World's Steepest Incline Railway and it descends 1,550 feet in 5.5 minutes. At a length of 1,178 feet, the Royal Gorge Tram is the World's Longest Single-Span Aerial Tram. It was constructed in 1968 and is capable of carrying a maximum of 35 people at about 11 mph.

U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel Colorado Springs

U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel Colorado Springs Picture
Unlike The U.S. Army's West Point or The U.S. Navy's Annapolis, which are steeped with history and traditional building designs, The United States Air Force Academy, located in Colorado Springs is notable for its use of modern architecture. Many of the Colorado Air Force Academy buildings employ aluminum on the exteriors, and as a structural element. The result of this modernist construction and design fits well with the aviation school, since aircraft and spacecraft also have aluminum exteriors and construction. Perhaps no place on the Air Force Academy campus is modern architecture more evident than the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel. Completed in 1962, the Chapel was at the center of controversy because of its design, though today it is viewed as a classic example of modernist architecture. Constructed of 17 aluminum spires soaring 150 feet high, the chapel was designed to serve the religious needs of all of the cadets. The main level houses a multi-denominational protestant chapel, which accommodates up to 1,300 people. The lower level of the chapel houses the catholic chapel which seats 500, the Jewish chapel which seats 100, and "all-faiths" rooms for the needs of smaller religious groups. Prior to visiting the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel, we'll spend a few minutes at the Barry Goldwater Visitors Center learning about the chapel and other interesting facts about the Academy.

U.S. Mint Denver Colorado

U.S. Mint Denver Colorado Picture
Established in 1863, the United States Mint in Denver was originally the Assay Office, used by miners bringing in gold dust and nuggets to melt into bars, weigh, stamp, and assess quality. In 1904 the U.S. Department of Treasury decided to turn the Assay Office into a working mint. The Italian Renaissance style building, which is still used today, opened and first started minting in 1906. Minting circulating coins of all denominations, coin dies, un-circulated coin sets, and commemorative coins authorized by the U.S. Congress, the Denver Mint often produces in excess of 50 million coins per day. Join BVT America on one of the Denver Mint Tours to get a new perspective on the coins that Americans use daily.

Belle Meade Plantation

Belle Meade Plantation Picture
In 1807, John Harding (from Virginia) purchased a log cabin and 250 acres located on the Natchez Trace, 6 miles west of Nashville, and started Belle Meade Plantation. Mr. Harding boarded horses for his neighbors in those early years, but by 1816 had begun to breed thoroughbreds. The Federal Greek Revival mansion was not built until 1853, but by that time the plantation had expanded to 5,400 acres and was renowned throughout the world for breeding champion Thoroughbred horses. As the site of intense fighting during the Battle of Nashville in the Civil War, the Belle Meade still shows scars of the violence. In 1953, 30 acres of the once mammoth plantation, the plantation house, and eight outbuildings were deeded to The Association for the Preservation of Tennessee's Antiquities. The Plantation was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and is presently operated as a museum.

President Andrew Jackson's Hermitage Plantation

President Andrew Jackson's Hermitage Plantation Picture
The White House, Mount Vernon, Monticello, and The Hermitage are the four most-visited presidential residences. Since 1889, when it was made into a museum to honor the seventh President of the United States, and the antebellum south, over 15 million people have visited The Hermitage. When Jackson purchased the cotton farm in 1804, it consisted of 425 acres, but while serving in the War of 1812, General Jackson's Hermitage continued to grow. By 1820 The Hermitage encompassed 1,000 acres and the plantation was operated with a work force of 44 slaves. After winning the popular vote for President in 1824, but failing to procure enough electoral votes, Senator Jackson lost the office to John Quincy Adams as was dictated by the House of Representatives. Feeling the sting of Washington corruption, Jackson resigned his senate seat and began planning his campaign for the 1828 election. The Presidential election campaign of 1828 is still considered one of the most brutal in United States history. Andrew Jackson and his supporters formed a grassroots party named the Democratic-Republicans, now known as the Democratic Party (Jackson was its first President). Unfortunately, Mrs. Jackson, Rachel Donelson Jackson died before Andrew Jackson was inaugurated; she is buried in a limestone and copper domed tomb in the gardens at The Hermitage, where President Jackson was laid to rest 16 years later. The original plantation house at The Hermitage was a two-story Federal-style mansion, which President Jackson expanded while serving his first term in the White House. In 1834, during Jackson's second term as President, a chimney fire destroyed most of the original plantation house. After the fire, President Jackson commissioned the Greek Revival structure which still stands today, and was completed near the end of his second term. Jackson's popularity with the "common man" was so great that over 10,000 people attended his funeral at The Hermitage in 1845. Years later, during the Civil War, Union troops formed a line to guard The Hermitage from the damages of war and protect Jackson's furnishings and mementos. On your visit to The Hermitage you can get a glimpse of the antebellum south, learn about plantation life in the 19th century, and absorb the history of Andrew Jackson, the only President of the United States to also serve as Governor (Florida), U. S. Representative, and U. S. Senator, as well as the only president in American History to pay off the national debt.

Ryman Auditorium Tour

Ryman Auditorium Tour Picture
The structure known today as The Ryman Auditorium was built by riverboat captain and Nashville businessman, Thomas Ryman. It opened in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle and hosted revivalists of the time. The 2,362-seat venue was renamed The Ryman Auditorium in 1905, after Thomas Ryman's death. Though The Ryman has had a variety of uses over the years, including being the home of a university, its most noteworthy tenant was The Grand Ole Opry. The Ryman was home to the Opry broadcasts and live shows from 1943 to 1974, during which time it was also known as The Grand Old Opry House, and The Mother Church of Country Music. After The Grand Ole Opry moved to its present 4,400-seat location, The Ryman sat mostly unused and fell into disrepair. After a series of concerts performed by Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers in 1992, interest in restoring the structure as an intimate performance venue increased. The Ryman Auditorium completed renovations in 1994 and reopened as a performance venue and museum. While many of the renovations were structural, great efforts were made to preserve the illustrious history of the auditorium. On BVT America's Nashville Christmas Tour, you will get a chance to experience history as you enjoy The Grand Ole Opry at the Historic Ryman Auditorium, enjoying the acoustics said to be second only to the Mormon Tabernacle, just as you would have in 1943.

The Incredible 37 Million Dollar Country Music Hall of Fame

The Incredible 37 Million Dollar Country Music Hall of Fame Picture
Conceived in 1961 by the Country Music Association (CMA), the Country Music Hall of Fame's first three inductees, Jimmie Rodgers, Fred Rose, and Hank Williams, were announced. Plaques with likenesses and biographies of the inductees were unveiled on the Grand Ole Opry and displayed in the Tennessee State Museum, up until 1967. After chartering a non-profit entity to operate the museum, the Country Music Foundation (CMF), the original Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum opened on Music Row in 1967. The Hall of Fame stayed at this location until the end of 2000. In 2001, the CMF held the grand opening of the $37 million facility where it presently presides. Exhibits which chronicle the evolution of country music through the turns of two centuries, live performances, public programs, distinctive architecture, video clips, and recorded music combine to make the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum one of less than 10% of the museums in the country accredited by the American Association of Museums.

The Parthenon and The Statue of Athena Picture
Nashville, also known as "The Athens of the South," constructed many buildings based on ancient originals for the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition (Worlds Fair). The Parthenon was the centerpiece of these structures, and it was the only one that was an exact reproduction. The original structure was built out of wood, plaster, and brick, but was rebuilt on the same foundations from concrete from 1920 to 1925. The interior of the Nashville Parthenon was completed in 1931, and houses an art museum. The central focus of the art museum is the 42 foot re-creation of the Athena Parthenos (Statue of Athena), which was completed in 1990, and based on the long-lost original.

Tour Famous Studio B Where Elvis Recorded Picture
Most noted for the studio where Elvis Presley recorded, Studio B was originally known as RCA Studios. At the request of Chet Atkins and Steve Sholes (head of RCA Victor Records' Country Division) the studio was built in 1957 and was an integral part of what became known as "The Nashville Sound." The popularity of the studio and recording in Nashville was such that an addition was completed in 1961. Unable to keep up with demand, RCA built a larger studio in 1964 which became Studio A, while the existing studio became known as, and remains today, Studio B. Though no one will dispute the importance of Elvis recording at Studio B, the list of musical performers to record at the studio is great in both length and variety. The Everly Brothers, Willie Nelson, Ronnie Milsap, Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton, Boots Randolph, Waylon Jennings, Charley Pride, and Mickey Gilley are just of few of the notable artists who made music magic at Studio B. Join BVT America on a guided tour of the famous Studio B, conducted by the Country Music Hall of Fame.
